17% Growth of Solar Power in the US

March 20th, 2009 · No Comments · Main Content

The results are in: Solar power installations in 2008 are 17% up on 2007. All different types of solar power have been installed: solar hot water, solar electric and solar thermal.

However, the less expensive solar hot water has had the biggest growth in the residential market.

The leading states: Hawaii installed the most solar hot water heaters. Florida and California were the runners up. California installed the most solar electric panels with 17.8 megawatts installed.

Large solar power plants are also in the works. With 6 gigawatts currently under development, solar power production is certainly on the move. (8.78 gigawatts is the current solar capacity of the entire US.)

The overall solar power production capacity reached about 8.78 gigawatts last year, up 17 percent from the 2007, according to SEIA’s year-in-review report.
Overall, about 25,500 new solar water heaters were put to use last year, the SEIA said. But the country isn’t as crazy about those heaters as China – one in 10 homes has one.

Kosovo’s First Solar Powered Project

March 20th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Main Content

Solar power is being introduced into Kosovo on a large scale for the first time. This pilot project could be the first of such installations in the Balkans.

Solar power has demonstrated that it can help to regenerate economies and countries. Hopefully this is true for Kosovo as it emerges from the shadow of its recent war.

Kosovo’s first solar project is going ahead with solar panels being installed at Pristina’s University and Hospital.

Financed by the Ministry of Energy and Mines, 40 solar panels are being set up in Pristina’s university designed to heat water for 700 students. Minister Justina Shiroka Pula said that energy from renewable sources is a priority and such projects are likely to become more frequent.

The minister said 120 thousand euros were invested primarily in Pristina’s Hospital Centre and now in the university project.

Kosovo has around 278 days with sun light meaning it can easily harness solar energy.

Around the World on a Solar Powered Ship

March 20th, 2009 · No Comments · Main Content

This Swiss and German enterprise is planning to make the first solar powered trip around the world. The ship will run silently and cleanly on a large solar panel array.

The voyage is planned to do several things. Firstly, to show that it can be done. Secondly, the sailors want to raise the profile of solar energy in the shipping industry.

Many innovations are being tested here: large mobile solar power, composite technology and solar powered storage.

The trip is planned to take 120 days, and will attempt to track the sunniest path around the world. Currently the ship is meant to leave early 2010.

PlanetSolar, instead of running on fossil fuels or wind, will collect its power from a from a 470 square meter solar array.
The panels on the ship will make it the world’s largest mobile solar array, according to the group, and the lithium-ion pack will be one of the world’s biggest moving lithium packs.

The 500,000 Euro Winner

March 14th, 2009 · No Comments · Main Content

Eben Bayer won the Picnic Green challenge with this innovative material. As an alternative to polystyrene insulation, it ticks all the boxes.

It takes very little energy to produce. It is an entirely organic structure. And it equals the performance of more conventional insulation.

The Picnic Green Challenge award is given to entrepreneurs who also display great talent in sustainability and inventiveness. Watch this space with interest…
